Naming a grandchild on an IRA beneficiary form feels like the kindest thing in the world.

It takes about ninety seconds. You type a name, you type a percentage, you click save, and you go get lunch feeling like a good ancestor.

Here is the problem. A minor cannot legally own an IRA. Not a regular one, not an inherited one, not for a day.

So the form works exactly as written, and then the legal system has to figure out who actually controls the money, and that process is slower, more expensive and far more public than anyone intends.

It is a solvable problem. It just has to be solved before it happens, not after.
