You walk in with a guitar worth $600 and walk out with $150 in cash.

That is not a sale. You still own the guitar, technically. You have thirty days, or ninety, depending on the state, to come back with the $150 plus fees and take it home.

Now stop and look at what just happened from the other side of the counter.

Somebody lent money to a stranger. No credit check. No income verification. No employment history. No application. No bank account required. They did not ask your name for underwriting purposes.

And they did it in about four minutes.

Every other lender in America would call that insane. The entire apparatus of consumer credit exists to answer one question, which is whether you will pay it back.

The pawnbroker skipped the question entirely.

Because they do not care whether you pay it back.

They are holding a $600 guitar against a $150 loan, which means there is no version of this transaction where they lose money.

That is the whole business, and once you see it, every strange thing about a pawn shop makes sense.
