Here is a fun experiment to run on a coworker.
Ask them what their car insurance costs. They will tell you, to the dollar, possibly with an opinion about it.
Ask them what their 401(k) costs. Watch the pause.
Almost nobody knows. Surveys have found that a large share of participants believe they pay no 401(k) fees at all, which is a bit like believing your employer does not charge for the coffee because you never see a register.
The money is leaving. It leaves every single day, in slices too small to notice, from an account you rarely look at, described in a document you have never opened.
The good news: that document exists, your plan is legally required to hand it to you, and finding your actual number takes about twenty minutes.
This is the treasure hunt. Let's go get it.
